The lost section of trail... We had a new FRB for the first time, and Congratz to Andy, who will be forever known as "Blow hard" .

LBI 18 Mile Run

On Sunday October 9th I ran The Long Straight Line, otherwise known as The LBI Commemorative 18 Mile Run.

This race is dedicated to the 11 Israeli athletes who were murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympics. It is also run in memory of those who lost their lives as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The course begins at the southern tip of the island in Holgate and finishes in Barneget Light State Park.

Summer must never end in Long Beach Island because it was hot as hell. Not a cloud in the sky and virtually no shade on the course. It made the flat and boring course even more challenging.

I took it slow and steady, but that was my game plan. I used this race as a tune up for the upcoming NYC Marathon.

My official time was 2:43:51.

Rockaway Rotary Run

We abandoned our regular Thursday night romp for the local 5k. It was hazy, hot, and humid. But it was HHH for all of us. Credit to Michele Reutty for this picture. This and others can be found on the Rockaway Rotary site.

President's Cup - A great night for all

The Highlands Hashers fielded two teams at the 2011 President's Cup 5k race. Collectively the A team placed 12th overall and the B team placed 21st out of 26 teams. Now, as we know, much depends upon who shows up. And this year was very competitive. Our times, run last year, would have placed 8th overall and 3 seconds within 7th place.

Congratulations to Andy on his first real 5k, and to all who bested their current year 5k times. Well done. And thank you to Ross for bringing the canopy and 6 foot sub! Thanks to our videographers, I have about 2 hours of video to edit down to 5 minutes.

President's Cup Race Report

My knee was feeling ok so I ran the President's Cup without my sandals on and I got a blister. Lucky for me, Sam Adams was there to help with the discomfort. On the ride home, the Parakeet stopped laughing just long enough to remind me that he only does punctures and infections. What a jerk.

Started at 3:35 in the morning and finished shortly before 10:00 p.m. after 5 flat tires and a thunderstorm. Please also note the steely driving skills of one Harry Palmer who drove the whole thing in low gear at 15 MPH.

The Spring Lake Five

Saturday May 28th was the 35th running of the Spring Lake Five. Early morning fog gave way to hazy sunshine and steamy conditions out on the race course. My official chip time was 39:39. I have run this race 18 times in the last 19 years. If you have never run Spring Lake, this race is a 'must do'. The SL5 is the largest race in New Jersey and the largest five mile race in the nation.

The course is nothing less than spectacular. Some of the highlights include ocean views during the first mile, a trip around Lake Como, running through the picturesque town of Spring Lake and finishing in front of the historic Essex & Sussex House.

Above, I am pictured with my nephew, and future Highlands Hasher Ryan Lee. Ryan participated in the Kids' race on Friday night.

Ridgewood Run - Hot Hot Hot

Update! Ross decided last minute to run the 5k - Dave had already dashed off to Hillsdale and did not notice. Ross finished in 21:37.

It took about 10 seconds to warm up in the sauna that was Ridgewood. Briefly, Mark Nocito, young gun, clocked a 38:27 (27th OA), Dave legged it out in 40:40 (49th), and Michael Beaudoin closely followed in 40:54 (55th). Not a bad showing out of 1,033 runners.

Dave later went on to march in the Hillsdale Memorial Day Parade in the Wild Thing costume... a new weight loss program.

The guy on the left is Mark Nocito (28). He recently turned in his club declaration to USATF-NJ and mistakenly put down our number! I didn't even know he was running today, but by chance he finished right behind me. Also in the running was Michael Beaudoin (42). Mark finished 2d in age at 18:53. Mike was 4th in age at 19:04 (some guy from Rockaway eased in ahead of him in the final posting...) and I was in at 18:51, 2d in age.

Superhero Half Marathon Relay

'Twas the best of times, 'twas the worst of times...
The Highlands Hashers presented two relay teams at the 2d annual Superhero half marathon in Morristown, NJ. The inter-squad challenge pitted John and Jeff against Brian and Dave. After hours of pouring pounding rain the skies let up to a misty wash of vapor. There was some last minute strategy and gamesmanship, however all wished each other well... In the end, team "I'm with Stoopid" won the male relay championship. A nasty gastrointestinal virus thingy brought team "Alpha-Awesome" disappointing news. Nevertheless, all Hashers ran strong and with admirable effort. And the heavy rains held off.

Note: All the other winning relay teams got cool looking mugs denoting their victor status. We got the leftover women's race gift certificates for haircuts and massages! We're looking into the mug issue....

The Road to Rhode Island

This past Sunday, Jeff and John headed up to their old college stomping grounds to participate in the Providence Marathon. The boys were joined by the Highlands Hashers' team coach (who also happens to be Mrs. Jeff) and her friend and honorary Hasher Jennifer, who ran in the half - marathon.

So here it is in a nutshell: Jeff ran very well and bettered his PR by 33 minutes. John hit the wall after mile 19 and struggled to finish. It was a little warm, very sunny, crazy windy at times, and kinda hilly. Not an easy day on the roads. Final results - Jeff: 3:24:51 and John 3:41:11.

New Jersey Marathon

I ran 4:08:59 at the New Jersey Marathon. My first Marathon in ten years!

The weather was spectacular, but deceptively warm. No shade from the blaring sun.

The course was as they say, "flat, fast and scenic". Ocean front start and finish in Long Branch. Marathoners ran through the towns of Monmouth Beach, Oceanport, Deal, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour, Asbury Park & Ocean Grove.

I was hoping for a little faster time, but leg cramps slowed me down considerably during the second half of the race.

A quick one - The MK 5k

A 5k so close to home we had to do it. And many other local runners felt the same way, so the competition was surprisingly tough. The winning time of this 'fundraiser' was 14:50. Ben Clarke, placed 2d, and was nice enough to take this photo of us.

The Highlands Hashers made their first effort at scoring as a team. Short one man for a full compliment of five, Ross Mistretta graciously offered to let us add his number to our team. Unfortunately it is not that easy to simply declare a fellow on a team.... USATF rules or some such thing. So it appears we didn't score 8th. (Drat). Anyway, that is the reason he is pictured above. And thanks!

Special thanks also to Sean, who ran 3 miles barefoot and cheered the other fellows who completed the 9.3 mile race of unspeakable hills. John walked away with 2d place in his age division - congratulations. Times and placement can be seen by following the link to official results.

It was colder than hoped for. A little windier than hoped for. But the event was very well run and there was some HH representation at this fundraiser for the Elizabeth Stein family. The entire field of runners was toasted by some young gun... and then 47 seconds later Dave came in second with 18:46, Bob took 4th with a new PR of 19:11, and Jeff took 5th in 19:47.

Four Mile Beach Run

It was a perfect day on the Jersey Shore. Sunny, blue skies, temperatures near 50 degrees and very little wind. I took advantage of the good weather and participated in the much heralded Long Branch Four Mile Beach run.

My finishing time was embarrassingly slow. Around 40 minutes. The entire course was run on the beautiful, white, sandy beaches of Long Branch. What I thought would be an easy run turned out to be quite a vigorous workout.

After the race, all runners were rewarded with one free beer at McLoone's Pier House.

We had to use our older camera for this video, so please forgive the quality, you need to look very closely for me in the water, but I'm there getting out. The hardest part was standing on the ice in my bare feet....

They raised 25K for special needs kids to go to summer camp, and the after party was excellent! How can you beat a full buffet and $1.75 drafts of Sam Adams! Veronica and I also won a few prizes at the raffle tables as well, a good day !

Ankle Update

So it's been two weeks... I am walking normally and even managed to absent-mindedly sit cross-legged yesterday without extreme pain or discomfort.

So, I decided to give it a go on a treadmill today. Started off at 5mph but it was too slow. My legs were urging me to go faster. I sped it up to 6 mph but that was too fast. Settled somewhere in the middle.

Definitely was loosening up and feeling better as time went on (ran about 12 min or so, i.e. 1 mile)

Will keep trying to do more everyday and hope to see you Thursday night for at least the 3 mile version.

Nine Highlands Hashers turned out for The Freezing Cold Hash on Saturday, and a great time was had by all. (I was going to use Convivial)

Congratulations to "Butters" and "Hairy Palmer" for recieving their Hash names before the event, and Congratz to the Highlands Hashers for winning the coveted "Hairiest Back Award".

We met a lot of great people on Saturday, and hopefully we will hear from them again !

Barefoot Running

So I had a chance to do some barefoot running today.

Running on soft-medium soft sand seemed to incur less heel-strike than running on firmer sand (closer to the water) did. On the 'hard pack', my stride felt like my usual jogging one - but noticed that if I picked up the pace, there was less heel-strike even on the firmer stuff.

Passaic County Running CLub Winter Series #1

Dave and Bob finished 10th and 11th respectively at the first race in the PCRC Winter Series. The series is scored best 3 times out of four, so there is still time to sign up and compete! We saw many familiar faces. A nice group to run with. I'm not sure if anyone took the club flyers, but someone did take the nice brown folder that we use to carry them!

The Hashers started 2011 with a group run around the streets of Rockaway followed by a convivial time at Hibernia Diner. We ran a little over 4 miles and the temperature was springlike. Our new coach also started her rehabilitation program following the walk run method. We wish her the best of recoveries.

Michelle later conspired with Jeff to introduce us to her water cure. At 2:11 p.m. Michelle, Jeff, Dave, and Alison plunged under the water at the annual Mountain Lakes "polar bear" event.(I'm not sure what the official name is or if there is one.) We did take notice of one prominent runner from the Essex team also participating in the water cure. (Photos by Bob Shields)

Brian and Dave made it down to Asbury Park in the midst of an all out blizzard. Brian's truck performed heroically, getting us there in time to join 100 other lost souls. The race had never been cancelled in 47 years! They did shorten the distance to 3 miles to allow participants to head home a little early. Dave placed 11 (10th overall male) and Brian placed 15th (took 3d in the 30-39 age group.) Pictured here are the questionable ones after plunging into the Atlantic for a quick dip and dash back to the convention hall.

Congratulations to John and Brian on their awards! They looked pretty sweet. Hopefully the trail footage will remind us next year to wear more appropriate footwear... or to pack more Advil.

Prediction Night

Each member was to predict the time that s/he (well, okay - there were no she's, but if ...) would finish the broken shin 5 mile loop. We all put our times to paper and placed them in a bag. Because of Veronica's gracious timing, Dave was able to partake and lead off. Starting at one minute intervals were tall Bob, John, Brian, older Bob, Gene, Jeff, and much later because of commuting logistics, Joshua. tall Bob passed Dave at mile 1, and that seriously messed with his head. Dave's head was once again seriously messed with when lo and behold, here comes older Bob down the wrong street out of nowhere. Some discussion ensued. Paces were not kept. Up comes John. There goes Bob. John starts discussion with Dave, seriously messing with his cadence. John goes forth. Here comes Brian running the course backwards without his headlamp. The headlamp was tossed when ripping his hat off... and so forth his ear. Older Bob headed for lights of Denville. Tall Bob "Ace of Pace" won the prediction night challenge - 25 seconds off pace. Gene followed with 42 seconds off pace. Joshua was 1:08 off. Dave 1:22 (though seriously messed with). Jeff 2:31. John 3:11. Brian and older Bob.... were good sports.

Fun night.

We get back to our roots with an early morning run on the Sussex Trail, the weekend before Steamtown Marathon for Dave, and I test my foot on the longest run I've done in 7 weeks.

I think John took 11 minutes off of his 1/2 marathon PR and I cut 4:57 off of mine.

Dave, well, he's just too fast already to make that kind of progress.

1LT Mark Dooley 5k

Been a busy few days, but wanted to get this out...

Last weekend Katie and I hit the road to race in the LT Mark Dooley 5k "Race of Remembrance" in Wilmington, VT. The race is in honor of my friend Mark, who was killed in Iraq on September 19th, 2005, while serving with the Vermont National Guard. The race also honors all of the fallen of Vermont, and their families.

It was a great day with many old friends, and the Hashers were represented two years in a row. Everyone missed John this year, but were a little relieved I didn't bring up "the ringer" again! However, the Dance did travel north again....more on that....much later.
