Episode 27 - 46th Annual Polar Bear Run - 5 Miler

The surf was a little rough, but the beer was smooth. Had so much fun we didn't check the results. Water temperature was 41 (F) and the air temperature was an astonishing 51 (F).

Episode 26 - Rehab Run

A short one to test Gene's knee. 3 miles around a snowy Morris Hills track. The beer was bourbon cask ale. I can't remember the brewery.

Episode 25 - The JFK 50

Well, we did it. The JFK is done. Here it is in 10 minute Youtube glory. Dave's Garmin 405 died after 7 hours or so. Here is the course map through 39 miles. It recorded a point at home when the battery was recharged.

Now, on to a Boston Qualifier!

Episode 24 - Hashathon

This weekend we participated in the 30th Annual Hash-A-Thon sponsored by the Jersey Shore Running Club. It was a beautiful day, over 60 degrees and sunny. Dave was the rabbit that launched Gene on a 1st place finish in the 40-49 group. Nice job Gene! See the course map here. The after party was fun. Enjoy the video to get a sense of the atmosphere. Oh, yeah, lets not forget Dave's 27th place finish - not too shabby.

Episode 23 - Heroes

I love autumn. It is a great time to run and October is a great time to get crazy. Would you run up Main Street Boonton in these outfits? After the High School kids are let out! We ran about 10.5 miles (see map)- the watch couldn't keep up.

This week we drank Ichabod pumpkin ale brewed by New Holland.

Episode 22 - Mountain Madness Preview #3

Dave and Gene return once again to inspect the first 8 miles of the Mountain Madness course. We went on to complete a 19+ mile run over the rest of the course seen in previous episodes. Pretty much more of the same with a nice surprise along the way.

Dave's map here.

Episode 21 - Dave runs naked

It is the Labor Day Weekend, so we're taking a break from our regular posting. Dave did have some time to offer his take on barefoot running. He usually runs this route in shoes, very early in the morning, before the cars and walkers take over. Get out there and get naked.

Episode 20 - MoMa Preview #2

Rick McNulty gives Dave and Gene another look at the Mountain Madness 50k course. This week we ran the out loop between aid stations 4/6 and 5, starting from Skyline Drive. After the run we met two other trail runners who will be running in the Reach the Beach Relay. They are running as a fundraiser for Billy's Buddies.

Our run can be seen HERE (we ran an extra loop, off course).

This week we drank Railbender Ale from the Erie Brewing Company.

Episode 19 - Mountain Madness Preview #1

This week we were joined by Rick McNulty for a preview of the Mountain Madness 50k course. We started from the location of aid station 3, ran the orange trail to AS4/6, headed up Cannonball to the blue trail, made a sharp right onto red until finding AS7. We then returned to AS3 following the earlier part of the course. Anyone entering this October race will get a decent idea of the trail conditions. This section was about 13 miles in around 3 hours, or just under 14 minute pace - a leisurely stroll.

See Dave's map here (before the battery quit!)

This week we drank Riverhorse Hop-a-lot-amus double IPA.

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Episode 18 - Tour de Tourne (on video this time)

This week we talk more than we run. But we covered 15 miles in 2.5 hours with 3 trips to the top of the Tourne. see map here. Hazy, Hot, Humid. Rocks, Roots, and Hills. This week we drank Dogfish 90 Minute IPA.

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Episode 17 - Turkey Swamp 50K

We replaced crew mate Robbie with Bailey. A big thank you to Veronica for hanging out for 5+ hours waiting for us to finish. It was hot, humid, and hotter when the sun popped out. Dave finished 7th overall (5th male) in 5:10:28. Gene finished 20th in 5:38:03. A tough run, and actually 32.27 miles instead of 31. We stopped at Damon's for refreshment. Dylan baked us cookies to great us upon our return.

Tour of the Tourne in the rain

Rick McNulty, race director of the Mountain Madness, and various other "challenging" trail runs, joined us on a wet slog through the Tourne. We ran 6.25 miles, give or take, and enjoyed Smutty Nose IPA.

Also, for a real hashing experience, check out Summit Hash House Harriers.

Episode 16 - Hardware at the Howard Bell 5k

We returned to our childhood stomping grounds - Mount Tabor - to run the annual Howard Bell Memorial 5k. There are three loops, all of which descend and climb the center "mount," ugh. We encourage all local runners to participate next year. The proceeds from this race help support Mt. Tabor's Children's Day - a tradition over 120 years old! We did enjoy a few adult beverages later, but the film has been destroyed. Enjoy:

Episode 15 - Marathon with Mark

Ran the full length of the Paulinskill Trail (well, we never did find the trail head Gene. And I would encourage you all to skip that last 1/2 mile of mud). Our special guest was Mark Bolitho. Gene will tell his story. 26.66 miles in about 4 hours 6 minutes (-+ stops). See the map here.

This week we drank Molson Ice.

Phedippidations

Hey, we've made the big time. A mention on Phedippidations. I've been listening to the Phedippidations podcast for three years now. (It's really well produced and goofy too. Perhaps it has had an effect on our videos?). Steve Runner has gotten me through many a long run. Thanks for the mention Steve. And to any of you who have not heard of this podcast for runners, check it out at steverunner.com

Episode 14 - Appalachian Trail Run

Hey, lookie cookie, we did get into the JFK50! Yikes, hope their 16 miles on the Appalachian Trail is easier than our 18.7. Well, lets just say Dave's still hurting 12 hours later and a few brewskies into the edit... On-On. Gene's Map is here.

This week's beer is Arrogant Bastard Ale, Stone Brewing Co.

Episode 13 - The Anniversary Run

Gene hammers the Splitrock Resevoir trail all by himself, while Dave enjoys a long weekend in the Big Apple. Gene ran something like 8.3 miles in around 2 hours (yes, it is a truly brutal nightmare of a trail, when you can find it). This is the down week, meaning, we recover for much more in the next 2 weeks. See the white trail here. Enjoy.

"Quote Of The Week"

"OMG, do that again, we need to get that on Video!" (Daves reaction after Gene took his first face plant on the Patriots path )

Episode 12 - The Independence Run

Dave and Gene celebrate the 4th of July weekend with a training run on Patriot's Path, Morristown, NJ. 18 Miles - 2:46:40 (roughly, Dave goofed and stopped his Garmin for 3 miles) 9:16 pace (but the part with Doug Clark was much faster - video camera refused to kick in then). A gorgeous summer morning, sunny, no humidity, slight breeze. Enjoy:

Samuel Adams Summer Ale.

Yes - That is THE Bill Rodgers

Bill said he'd join us for our next beer ( I mean run ). Seriously, a great guy, who gave much time to everyone standing in line for his signature. We got two books. Gene also placed 3d in the 40-45 group at the Bloomfield Sunset Classic 5 Miler. Dave sat it out for pizza. Dylan got a medal too in the kid sprints.

HH10 - Snorkel Gear

The episode when Gene wears the snorkel mask and Dave dreams of runaway beer. Rain, rain, rain. oh, and more rain! Ran 20 miles on the Upper section of the Sussex Branch RR trail. Dave seems recovered from his brush with ankle injury, but nearly bonks without enough food. Gene seems almost too fresh. See the map.

Don't Do This Again

It took 24 hours for the foot to look like this. I did run one mile this morning for day 67. Dodged another disaster.

The streak continues (we think)

Dave heads out on Pyramid Mountain for a trail run. The scheduled 8 miler is cut short when the right ankle turns badly at mile 2. The last 3 miles are run primarily through swampland. This is day 66 of the streak. Tomorrow will be a slow hobble around the lake for 67...

Lackawanna Tunnel Run

We'll it wasn't the beautiful sunny day we had hoped for. We did find the run a bit longer than planned. See the map here.

12.1 miles in around 9:21 pace - Dave didn't stop his watch and Gene didn't charge his!

5 Bears, 2 Beers, 20 Miles

Dave was all set and on the road when he remembered he left the beer in the fridge, turned around, and retrieved it. This was simply going to be a food episode, however, we saw 5 black bears along the way. PRETTY COOL. We started at the 3 mile mark on the Paulinskill and did a 10 out 'n back for a total of 20 miles easy running.

Trail map here.

Patriot's Path - We do math!

Another Sunday morning romp through the woods. Again, we need maps. Patriot's Path is actually not one simple path, but many spurs, loops, and "proposed" sections strung out through Morris County. Watch it. About 18 miles in just under 3 hours, edited into a 4 minute clip. Pardon Gene's accent.

Here's the link to the map

Splitrock West Shore

Our first REAL trail run. OUCH! I have to say my Garmin 405 held up pretty well. CLICK HERE FOR THE COURSE MAP. Enjoy this week's installment. It is a little longer, but, then again, so was the trail. 7.16 miles in about 1:50.

Faster than Geno

Dylan ran 3/4 of a mile. Not at once, but through intervals. Say, "scholarship."
We also cut out enough copper at Grandma K's house to pay for a pair of new road shoes for daddy.
Yeah.

Power Lines

Couldn't wait. I tried to bag a sunrise shot from the top of Powder Mill, but the powerline trail kicked my butt. Click on the photo collage to enlarge. This was to be a 3 mile out n back. More like 2.5. Quads screamed. The top of the mountain was shrouded in fog. The bottom of the valley was covered by a 4 foot stream. The shoes are now broken in.

Most people are normal. Normal is boring. We're not normal.

HH#1 - On our way to insanity

We think we drank Harpoon IPA. 10 Miles on the Sussex trail. A bad idea is hatched.
