Polar Bear Races 2012 - A fine showing

We had a good group travel to Asbury Park for the annual Polar Bear Races. The boardwalk south of the convention center was under repair, so we headed north for a bit and then hooked left in the winds of Valhalla and the sands of the Sahara. We all got our 3.3 mile PR. Bob took home a confused dark furred bear (actually two if you look close.) by claiming 3d in the old guy category. Butters is to be complimented for suggesting Pete and Elda's for the XXL pizza eating challenge. Hey, at least we brought home t-shirts. A fine fun day to end the season. Happy New Year! [no, we did not plunge this year. Sorry. Call us what you will. We who wore shorts for the race are still picking the sand out of the pores.]

Facebook

The Highlands Hashers now have a facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/HighlandsHashers

So check it out, and "Like" us.  I mean really, really LIKE us.

(Google has just alerted me to the fact that Sally Field actually said "I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!" - Who am I to argue with Google.  Did you know that she played Tom Hanks' love interest in one movie while playing his mother in another movie?  Talk about versatile.  Thanks again, Google)

Oh, but enough about Sally Field.  Why are you even still reading this?  Check out our facebook page, then go for a run.

2012 Hashathon

Butters and Gonad attended the 2012 Hashathon. It was postponed due do FEMA trucks staged in the parking lot shortly after Hurricane Sandy.... And there were some rather large trees down along the course and much evidence of reconstructed boardwalks and stairs. A drizzly rain kept the course slippery and several felled trees were left in place as proper hazards. No one was injured and a good run was had by all. Our appreciation goes to the race organizers for keeping the tradition alive.

Snake Hill Road Loop

Before

After
There is this 64 year old guy I have been seeing around and he has been regularly paddling my ass in races all year.  I finally beat him on Thanksgiving Day, although in his defense, his Age Graded PLP is still 8 or 9 points higher than mine.  He told me how he has watched me get better all year and gave me this advice: over the winter go for some long runs.
Anyone up for it, let me know.  If Dave isn't there, we don't necessarily have to leave at Zero Dark Thirty, but I have to tell you, there is something really nice about it.

Old Man Strength, the A8K Edition. (Revised)

Time: 30:38.13 (unless you go by chip time, in which case the time is 30:34.81)

Place: 82/1307 (12/183 Men 40-44) Good enough for a mug, a handshake from Horace Ashenfelter himself, and THIS IS NOW OFFICIAL: 669 Grand Prix Points (bringing my total to 5019).

Age Graded PLP: 73.24, my best performance in any race.

To say that I am pleased with the result is an understatement.

Old Man Strength! (Revised Results)

It was a beautiful day to run a 5k up in Sparta. Dave, Jeff, and Michelle ran the Krogh's Turkey Trot. As planned, Dave held onto Jeff's ass most of the the way and then made a move around the 2 mile mark. Being a downhill finish, gravity prevailed and it was a close finish. We are pleased with the results:
Dave - 18:21 chip (new post-high school PR - most unexpected) 3d 40-49 division
Jeff - 18:28 chip
Michelle - 28: 07 chip
A good time was had by all.
We will forever debate the whole net-chip timing system, as it seems you aren't racing the guy in front of you, you are racing some dude in the back of the pack with a faster net-time!

Results from Philadelphia - "Outstanding"

Congratulations to Luis! He finished his first marathon in 3:31:51.
The splits are not posted, so I can't see how bad he crashed! ha ha ha. But the first 10k was in 44:4 something. see link (could the weather be any more perfect?)

New Singlet?

Imagine it with a Highlands Hashers logo on the front with an "On-On" foot on the back.

I am going to be shaking people down for money over the next couple weeks so we can get enough to place an order.

River To Sea Relay 2012

Oppressive heat and humidity could not deter The Highlands Hashers from completing the River to Sea Relay for the second year in a row.  The 92 mile trek across the State of New Jersey began in the small town of Milford  and finished on the beach in Manasquan.

This was a tremendous team effort from everyone involved.

Outstanding!

Memorial Day A.T. Run

Here we are at the highest point in New Jersey.  The group left from Sunrise Mountain in the morning.  Two of us turned around after three miles and drove to Highpoint to meet the rest of us.  I am sure a couple of the other guys could have run the 10 mile return trip, but I was dehydrated and tired enough to call it a day.

Despite the deceptively hot weather, a convivial time was had by all.

If Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order Special Victims Unit) got married to Anton Krupicka (some guy only Andy really cares about) would she change her name to Mariska Krupicka?

Try saying it 5 times fast.

Plan Fac - I'm Back!

Good News Guys...I got plantar fasciitis!!!!!!

The only way to get it is to overdo it and the only way I was able to overdo it was by getting the knee straightened out.  I'm still nowhere near 100% but I should be able to do some road racing now and maybe get back on the trails for the May hash.  It was a long and twisted road (for my knee at least) but all in all, the injury was a good thing since it taught me several lessons.

So wat is the next race you're all going to?

Well if this isn't encouraging...

I'll see you guys if I get back!! - Gonad

Advisory From Boston Marathon Medical Directors to Entrants in the 2012 Boston Marathon

Saturday, April 14, 2012 as of 11:30 a.m.

We are looking closely at the current weather situation which is projected  to be quite warm. The B.A.A. is closely monitoring this situation for for race day decisions. If the temperatures reach certain levels, running will put even the most fit athletes at risk for heat injury.

We are now making the recommendation that if you are not highly fit or if you have any underlying medical conditions (for example-cardiac disease, pulmonary disease or any of a number of medical problems), you should NOT run this race.

Inexperienced marathoners should not run.

Those who have only trained in a cooler climate and who may not be acclimated (for at least the last 10 days) to warm weather running conditions should also consider not running.

For those very fit athletes who decide to run, you should take significant precautions:

Run at a slower pace and maintain hydration.
You should frequently take breaks by walking instead of running.

This will not be a day to run a personal best.  If you choose to run, run safely above all else. Speed can kill.

Heat stroke is a serious issue and is related to intensity of running as well as the heat and humidity.

Good hydration is important but over hydration can also be a problem. Thirst is an indication that you are under-hydrated. You should maintain hydration levels slightly greater than your hydration program in your training, but not excessively so.

Even the fittest athletes, that take precautions can still suffer serious heat illness. Recognizing symptoms of heat illness in yourself and others is critical , this may include headaches, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. If you experience any of these, stop running immediately and if symptoms persist seek medical attention.

Dr. Pierre d'Hemecourt and Dr. Sophia Dyer

Mount Washington Winter Ascent

For some reason I can't get the aspect ratio correct. But for those interested in our little walk in the park, here is a short video based upon the still shots.... hang in there for the glissade section. There is nothing quite like sliding down a mountain on your heine only a few yards away from the cliff edge.

The Rat Race

Deep in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens is The Rat Race 20K and 10K trail runs. I opted to participate in the 20K version which was two loops around Wells Mills Park in Waretown.
The course was great. There were more than enough ups and downs, twists and turns, foot bridges and obstacles to keep it fun and interesting for the full 12.4 miles.

I even placed third in my age group and was awarded a yellow block of cement shaped as a wedge of cheese for my efforts.

Proceeds from the event go to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Hashers, hard core trail runners, road racers, track & cross country guys and even Mizzoni would have enjoyed the Rat Race.

FEBRUHASHARY !

Today was Limpy's February Hash.

Weather conditions were perfect for a mid winter hash run. It was cool and comfortable with bright sunshine. Snow and ice were not to be found.

The three beer checks were enough to make the Hashers forget the challenging course. "Shiggy Trail" would be an understatement.

A Big Thank You to Gene and Veronica for hosting the On After at their home.

Don't forget, March 17th is the Annual Highlands Hashers Saint Patrick's Day Pub Crawl.
